Point Grey (PGR) Flea3 - USB3 cameras

These cameras are small fast gray-scale cameras you can use for various purposes.

Our model is FL3-U3-13S2M-CS, if the appropriate sticker is not on the camera body you should look for the last user who removed it and report him to the research group leader immediately.

There are two cameras, and two camera lens selected to match: Fujinon YV3.3x15SA-2, 15mm-50mm, 1/3", CS mount Lens.

Below is an example of a picture taken. the ruler is submerged in the water to assess the field of view (Camera was positioned about 60cm away from point of interest, with no “extender disc” used). notice the small particles floating in the water: picturesize-laseron.jpg

First time guide

Notice that the camera has a small plastic disc to extend the location of the lens. these disc arrived with the cameras, and since there are 2 cameras there are in total 2 discs (more can be bought if needed). Considering the lens have a limited focus range, you cannot have a clear picture at any distance, and extender discs are needed.

There are three methods of operation that have been tried:
1. Attach the lens to the camera directly, i.e. no discs. this is what used in the picture above. focus can be obtained at distance of >30cm up to ~80cm (verification needed). field of view can be varied from 10 cm, to 25 cm. probably more, but further tries are needed.
2. using only one extender disc. the focus can be achieved at ~10 up to ~30cm. however, Field of view would be <10cm at all times.
3. using two extender discs. the focus can be achieved at <10cm, but field of view would be very small (<2cm).

It is advised to position the camera, and always take a first snapshot using a ruler in the picture. for assessing the pixel size later on

Software

The Flea3 camera has a software coming with it. as for drivers, it should install automatically on any new OS. For the newest FlyCapture viewer (the basic Greypoint viewing software) go to the Greypoint download website, registration is needed.
A previous copy of the FlyCapture viewer software is located on the Tsail server: Link.

FAQ for the FlyCapture viewer software:
Q: why doesn't the software identifies my camera? the driver is listed on the computer.
A: make sure the usb is connected to a USB3 port. must be marked as a blue marker with SS on it.

Q: My camera disconnected during capture, is something wrong?
A: No. sadly, i have also experienced disconnections. for a steady connection use Labview (Update after trying it out)

Q: the fps is not at it's at maximum. what should i do?
A: go to the camera settings, and into the Custom Video Modes tab. choose full Region of Interest, and at the bottom increase the packet size to maximum. the fps should be at 120 now.

there are other options to work with the Flea3 camera:
1. Matlab or get a PDF here
2. LabView (with NI-Vision) or get a PDF here
3. Download the full SDK and develop your own software (good luck! why are you not at the Computer Sciences Faculty?)
